How bleak would life be without a lilting voice or a melodious tune? How many times have you gone through your day, desperate to recall a song you knew? Does that answer how important is music in our life, starting with the early years?
We sing songs with simple hand gestures and facial expressions, finger play and using musical instruments to help children smoothly transition from one activity to the next. Music has the ability to strengthen the connection between body and brain to work together. When dancing and moving to music, children develop better motor skills whereas singing along to a song helps them to practice their singing voice. In general, exposure to music supports children in their development process to learn the sound of tones and words. Over the last few weeks, I have seen many of our young children focus on sounds and enjoy familiar as well as new songs. Later they become more engaged in singing and demonstrate their excitement through simple hand gestures, facial expressions and actions.
Music and movement enhances development of coordination and rhythm as they follow a song, along with attention and memory. Moving and dancing to a tune helps children build motor skills while allowing them to practice self-expression. They are able to express their joy and wonderment as well as they sing along!
